I got a notification today that was just a "Hey, watch this, it changes everything". So, I went and watched it and I have to say I am impressed, even though the People's Republic of Illinois has banned the sale of "assault weapons" and it isn't available to me. What they have done is found a loophole in the NFA where a rifle is defined as "

"a weapon designed or redesigned, made or remade, and intended to be fired from the shoulder and designed or redesigned and made or remade to use the energy of the explosive in a fixed cartridge to fire only a single projectile through a rifled bore for each single pull of the trigger, and shall include any such weapon which may be readily restored to fire a fixed cartridge."

Franklin filed a lawsuit against ATF when they ruled the product they had come up with was a "rifle" and since the barrel was shorter than 16" it was a short barrel rifle. The first case upheld the ATF ruling but the appeal the judge ruled against ATF which lead to a settlement. So, why is it not a rifle? Because it wasn't designed to fire a single projectile only, it is designed to fire multiple projectiles. The multiple projectiles are in the form of a "bullet" which is made of plastic and houses several smaller projectiles. When it goes through the barrel, the plastic breaks open and releases the multiple projectiles.

They have done the same thing with "shotgun" because the definition of a shotgun "a weapon designed or redesigned, made or remade, and intended to be fired from the shoulder and designed or redesigned and made or remade to use the energy of the explosive in a fixed shotgun shell to fire through a smooth bore either a number of projectiles (ball shot) or a single projectile for each pull of the trigger, and shall include any such weapon which may be readily restored to fire a fixed shotgun shell."

A shotgun has to have a smooth bore. They added straight rifling, it is no longer a shotgun and since it was meant to fire more than a single projectile with each shot, it can't be a rifle either.
c

A few years ago Tommag got me hooked on the 6.5 Grendel. At one time I had a pretty nice long barreled upper that I swapped back and forth with a 80% lower I have, but when I moved to alaska that upper turned up missing. I also had a short barreled upper that was a loaner for awhile.

Anyway. I still have a bunch of grendel stuff. Bullets, dies, brass, ammo, magazines, the works, and I tell Tom fairly often that I want to put togther another one and I think the time has come.

I'm not really all schooled up on ARs. I built the 80% I have with the guidance of a friend with a borrowed jig and don't really want to go through the work again, and I've gotten to where I don't really like swapping uppers around and just want to have complete rifles.

I'm thinking I want a 18" barreled rifle. maybe a 20, but I want something that easy to pack, but also pretty accurate for longer shots out to maybe 600 yards.

But lets start with the lower. I'm not on a super tight budget with this, but I also don't have unlimited funds. I want the best I can get for my money without over spending.

Are lowers pretty generic to where I can get away with a cheaper one, or do I need to be looking at spending more money on a lower?

Tactical shooting has never interested me, I've always been into accuracy. I have an old Remington 788 with a hart bbl,1:14 twist in 223 improved that was nicely bedded (not by me) and it sports a timney trigger. On my best days it would shoot in the .15 range using 52gr Bergers or 53gr Sierra's with a case full of imr 4895. I never liked plastic, but one day I shouldered an AR-15 and it spoke to me. The danged thing just felt right! So, a dpms lite 16 followed me home.
I didn't expect much but I carefully prepped 20 brass (my usual, deburr the flash hole/turn the necks/uniform the pockets, etc.) I selected a mid level load of 4895 under some berger 52gr hps. I know it had a fast enough twist to stabilize heavier bullets, but I went with my tried and true favorite bullet.
Now with a non-floated pencil thin bbl, I sat down at the bench.
Holy Moly! With my first load I was shooting .4 groups! Thus began my love affair with the platform. I had no idea a semi auto rifle could be so accurate. That carbine is long gone, but I set out to see what I could do with ar15s. I learned about thermo-fitting, free floating handguards, etc. and was on my way.
I found the journey quite satisfying. It culminated in a bartlein heavy barrel chambered in 6.5 Grendel thermofitted to a bcm upper and a timney trigger group. That stupid thing almost had no preferences for bullets as long as they were in range of 95 to 120 grains. It shot one ragged hole groups with the Hornady 100gr bullets, which have been replaced by a polymer tipped bullet. Besides the little accurizing steps in putting it together, I'm convinced the case design itself has something to do with it. I know the 220 Russian variants in .22 and 6mm has taken a lot of championships in the bench rest world.
Anyway, I've only competed against myself, but I found it satisfying. It's not applicable to the tactical world but that wasn't my goal. In my mind Townsend Whelen said it best. "Only accurate rifles are interesting."
