Paging Rampy! 32 Magnum questions.

15 Replies, 1810 Views

Since you're our resident H&R 32 magnum expert, I have some questions. My thumb joint arthritis is not getting any better. While I can still handle full power 38spl;, it's no longer fun. I know you've recently switched to the 32 and would like to hear your experiences, opinions and recommendations. What have you learned of it's effectiveness against actual bad guys? What non boutique ammo would you recommend? Anything else that would be useful for me to know in making a decision on whether to switch.

Thanks brother!

I’ve been shooting 3 different brands of 32 ammo, double tap, Lost River and High Desert ammo

When my double tap and lost river is shot up High Desert will be my ammo of choice

The below link has the recommended 32’s so you can see the difference between them. I’ve only got 3 of the S&W 32’s

You also have the option of 32 Long which High Desert developed a self defense load. Nice thing about High Desert is it’s retired cop owned and has worked is working with some serious revolver guys to develop excellent ammo that shoots to point of aim with as little recoil as possible while also achieving good depth

I’ve never shot 32 Long, the daughter has out of my 632 UC and she has that revolver on loan and she says it’s very accurate with noticeable less noise and recoil

This is high deserts web site, they ship by weight so I always order the $25 shipping and play with different calibers till I get the max weight possible. I have 32, 357, 44 special and 44 mag

they also have a new low recoil 38spl short barrel load developed with yet another guru in the self defense law enforcement ballistics arena

I’ve yet to purchase any 38 but that’s cuz they have taken a back seat to the 32.

32 Gives me 6rds, noticeable less recoil than a 38 with very acceptable accuracy and are easy to shoot
Sorry, I’m tired, and scatterbrained spent the day shopping for long term “survival” food and got a bathtub liner for water (no room for a barrel) got some long term dehydratited from Costco & Amazon along with canned goods at Costco and Sam’s after comparing prices

Lots of chatter about civil unrest coupled with Russia declaring war on NATO among other crap. Local base once again ended trusted travernprogram & it’s 100% ID check, no military ID you go to visitors center they run a background check on you before giving you a temp pass

Spent way to much money but will have 6 months worth of food tucked away with water being the weakest link

Just put together a range bag, taking the Taurus 2.5” 44 mag shooting tomorrow (just 44 special) 2 of the 32 J frames and a Stacatto CS 9mm

Crap forgot the link

Need to get a smaller range bag, 1 for pistols and 1 for revolvers instead of cramming everything into one bag

Revolver guy excellent info

Grips, the new UC’s come with excellent grips, VZ really worked had to have a killer grip if you buy a titanium Jframe (noticeably lighter) you also get Hamre Forge grips and they are custom designed for pocket carry & you can get them with a hook so you do not need a holster like how cops ran a 2nd revolver in the 50’s-80’s and earlier

I like the grips for pocket carry along with one of 3 different pocket holsters from American Fighting Revolver who has worked with industry experts not only on designing the 632/ruger 32’s several other revolvers and with a couple 3 different holster makers for pocket carry

I’ve got a old school Alessi pull they snap shoulder holster I’m trying to figure how best it works for me, think I like the lighter titanium J frame as it does not swing as much while still not to light

I'll check out those links. I've been considering switching to hard cast wadcutters in my 38. How does the recoil of the 32 mag compare to 38 wadcutters? Which do you think, based on your own research, would be more effective at making a bad guy less bad?

when one can find Gold Dot short barrel 38spl ammo thats the gold standard in snubs
im down to 20ish rds of it and loaded hard cast wadcutters and the gold dots were reload due to bullet profile & easier to reload under stress

Was/is carrying George Arms wadcutter ammo in my 38 and shooting it, it’s excellent ammo and soft shooting it’s designed for 2”revolvers and passes the denim jel tests with ease

32 recoil is noticeably less than 38, I’ve read where people claim it’s 40% less

all I know is it’s noticeably less and I can shoot lots more 32 before getting fatigued even when shooting hot double tap ammo

My wife loves 38 wadcutters. They're what we trained with in the academy back in 1975, and she outshot most of the men in our class with her 3" 38. Very mild recoil.
