Ear pro - srjdsmith - 08-19-2026 So let me just say that I hope- I EXPECT -to die an old man having never needed to point a gun at another human being in self defense. But I’m not a fool, and if the need to protect myself or my loved ones arises, I intend to to provide such protection as I am able. That said, I have secure, but fairly quick and easy access to an AR pistol in 300 AAC and a 12 ga pump shotgun. I have trained and practiced with a number of home/self defense weapons of the long gun and hand gun varieties. But because I don’t live in a ‘dangerous’ place (more than once Chicago’s Finest have collected 9 mm casings in the alley behind my sister’s house) I have never found the need to brandish said weapons outside of a shooting range setting. So, I never thought of the issue of hearing protection because I’m always wearing it at the range -until someone here mentioned it. If ANY sort of firearm is discharged in the hallway of a house, my hearing is likely to be totally disabled for some time. What if there was a pair of ‘active’ suppression shooting muffs stored conveniently along with the weapons? I know there is an issue with the extra few seconds to put them on and the delay that would cause. But, I’m about as blind as a bat without my glasses and they have to get put on anyway. And I’m not going to take time to use my hearing aids, so prior to any shooting my hearing will be anything but acute. Active muffs solve both the problem of not hearing well before shooting is necessary and the deafness afterward of shooting does become necessary. Thoughts? Recommendations for proper equipment? RE: Ear pro - MontanaLon - 08-19-2026 Yeah, touching off a shot indoors is definitely not good for the hearing. I've had good luck with the Walker's Game Ears. I had a pair of Silencio electroncs years ago that were pretty basic, not stereo and they worked pretty well. Having stereo really doesn't seem to be that big of a difference but the loud noise shutoff circuits are a lot better these days. It used to seem like the muffs took just a little bit of time to turn off from the shot. The newer ones don't seem to do that at all. I've worn them while hunting and the stereo doesn't really seem to make a difference in being able to detect which direction the sound came from, at least for me. I bought the kids cheap electronic ones from Walmart on clearance years back. Was less that $20 and they work fine. RE: Ear pro - Rampy - 08-21-2026 I’ve had walkers electronic ear pro for years, the wife & offspring hated them and had to double up with ear plugs & said they were uncomfortable I went and spent the cash on 2 pair of Sordin supreme Pro X with gel ear seals both traditional over the head and behind the neck The women prefer behind the neck as they don’t press so hard around the ears & are way more comfortable. They don’t need to use double ear protection any longer the Sordin are so superior https://srstactical.com/sordin-supreme-pro-x-hearing-protection-headset-hear2.html RE: Ear pro - Rampy - 08-21-2026 Nothing wrong with keeping high quality electronic hearing protection by the bed, I know several people who do One huge advantage is how you can adjust the sensitivity and it’s like wearing hearing aids only better (than my current VA issued hearing and) RE: Ear pro - srjdsmith - 08-21-2026 (08-21-2026, 12:51 PM)Rampy Wrote: I’ve had walkers electronic ear pro for years, the wife & offspring hated them and had to double up with ear plugs & said they were uncomfortable The thing is, in this case, I’m specifically thinking home def. Even if they aren’t fully effective, the reduction for the shooting part and subsequent amplification before and after shots are fired is all about not going totally deaf after shots are fired. i guess I could grab them for the range, too, but I really want them right by the bang sticks in case I need them for intruders. (I have some Axil in-ear I like for the range, but they don’t amplify very much- just enough to hear conversation around- and I wouldn’t want to be stuffing them in my ears while two-legged rats are coming down the hall.) RE: Ear pro - tommag - 08-21-2026 I had two different electronic muffs quite a while ago, a Walkers and the other one was something like ken light, not sure if that's correct. I found both of them slow to cut out and filed them in the round file. If they have indeed improved I'd be happy to see your recommendations. RE: Ear pro - Rampy - 08-21-2026 I can’t recommend Sordin highly enough, the indoor range we use a guy was shooting a 338LM with a brake of some kind & good grief you felt it in your bones However, the Sordin’s cut off perfectly every squeeze of the trigger and it was not painful or loud, the electronics worked perfectly Go to https://srstactical.com/ and look around at the different options, from expensive to incredibly stupid expensive These are the 2 I ordered Sordin Supreme Pro-X Hearing Protection Headset - Neckband Cup Color OD Green Select Earseals Gel Earseals Headset Kit Bag No Bag 76302-X-G-S $314.10 Ordered 1 Shipped 1 $314.10 Subtotal$314.10 Shipping & Handling$0.00 Grand Total (Excl.Tax)$314.10 Tax $0.00 Grand Total (Incl.Tax)$314.10 Sordin Supreme Pro-X Hearing Protection Headset - Fabric Headband Cup Color OD Green Cups - Camo Headband Select Earseals Gel Earseals Headset Kit Bag No Bag 75302-X-G-S $338.00 Ordered 1 Shipped 1 $338.00 Subtotal$338.00 Discount (10% Memorial Day Discount)-$33.80 Shipping & Handling$0.00 Grand Total (Excl.Tax)$304.20 Tax $0.00 Grand Total (Incl.Tax)$304.20 RE: Ear pro - Rampy - 08-21-2026 I’ve looked at in ear protection & Blackout by AKT1 Sport came to the top of the pile by several guys I know but they were very critical of all of em & 1 guy is a master class (or grand, I forget what it is) shooter & he says he has shot 16,000 rds thru his race guns so far this year 😱😱 And then ISOtunes Sport Caliber BT & XIL XCOR Pro were tied for second My hearing aids are custom molded to my ear canal & are from Starkey AI something or other & even wearing them under the Soridn’s it’s not real loud and they fit comfortably so I figured to save the money RE: Ear pro - Rampy - 08-21-2026 Can’t figure out how to post a video so here’s a crappy picture of the Mrs wearing the Sordin’s this is shooting a Staccato CS, it’s a small concealed carry pistol & has a rather snappy recoil Had a 35-40 mph cross wind and was rather interesting shooting in that much wind, the indoor range does not allow steel case ammo so we stopped here on the way home
