The newest American - srjdsmith - 07-25-2026
My wife took her oath of citizenship in Des Moines. She’s now a dual citizen of Canada and the United States.

Two of my kids were there (the eldest is in Tucson)

Congratulations! When my ex became a citizen she had to renounce her Dutch and Canadian citizenship back in the 80s.
Funny story: When she was sworn in everybody was offered voter registration. All the new citizens were unsure if they should register as dem or Republican. She addressed them asking if they came here to work and provide for themselves or to rely on the government. Of course, they all replied " To provide for ourselves " She said "Good, then you're Republicans." They all registered as Republicans.

Hah! We had a DELICIOUS lunch at Jethro’s BBQ in Altoona (Des Moines area). It was a pile of meat that I managed to get outside of, but I wasn’t hungry for a great while afterwards. We stopped at Bass Pro Shop (a very American thing to do) then went for BBQ.
Stupid me- I ALWAYS forget going I80 home from Des Moines that you cruise right past Brownells. By the time I see the building, it’s too late to exit. Not that I need to be tempting myself with any of the toys therein. But one of these times…
