Damn shame the direction Colorado has taken on gun rights.
We stayed for a couple days in Colorado Springs on our move down here to Texas - my wife's favorite aunt lives there and we had to stop & visit. Summer of 2020 I saw probably half a dozen people open-carrying while we visited the King Sooper, and other places around town. Seemed like a town that had its head on straight compared to Denver. We came in to Colorado by way of Hwy 40 - coming thru Dinosaur, Rangley, White River City, Rifle, Vail, Breckenridge and then down through Fairplay and Hartsel before making the Springs. Gorgeous country and it was so hard not to stop and dig out a fly rod at some of the scenic lakes and rivers we passed along the way. We decided to avoid New Mexico on our journey onward because of how they were acting during COVID - so we cut across SE Colorado thru Rocky Ford, Kim, Pritchett and Springfield before hitting Boise City, Oklahoma (which was far more depressing visually than Boise, Idaho.) All those small towns, with the exception of Vail and Breckenridge felt like normal America. Hardly saw anyone in masks, hardly witnessed people yelling at others over masks and "social distancing" etc. Even in the Springs it wasn't that bad. Veil and Breckenridge we saw young healthy looking people on the sidewalk, outside, on a sunny day, wearing masks.
I remember the whole reason we went thru the town of Kim was that my wife and mother in law needed to pee, so we drove past our turn off into town and stopped at the gas station there. Pretty sure they had a sign on the door asking you to *remove* any masks so they could see who was entering the establishment. I wouldn't have been shocked at all seeing people strolling around town open carrying (perhaps open carrying something old school and stylish like a Python or a 686 in a nicely tooled leather rig)
Even Colorado liberals used to like their guns. One of my favorite outdoor authors lived most of his life in and around Lyons, and he wrote often about guns (usually in reference to hunting though sometimes about carrying a six shooter for protection in the back country) and the crowd of people he associated with likewise were gun friendly - basically gun friendly hippies that fished and hunted and just wanted to be left alone by "the man." I guess Colorado got Californicated like Oregon, Washington, and the rest of the western US. Texas is getting Californicated - the majority of new driver licenses coming from out of staters according to Texas DPS are Californians - 1/8 of all people moving here and getting a license switched over are from California.
I've honestly thought about relocating to Colorado at some point because of how beautiful it is there (I miss mountains, I miss seasons other than hot, and last summer kinda cooked my damned brain) but not with Colorado going hardcore anti-gun. It'll have to be a place we maybe visit.
