I disagree. Zelensky made it known early on in the conversation he wouldn't compromise with putin. So, how is there going to be any good faith effort to negotiate? He was all about security garuntees being needed up front. He made a big deal that we needed to send them our best air defense systems. We don't even give our allies our best air defenses in most cases. And make no mistake, Ukraine is not an ally to the US. During the war in Afghanistan Ukraine allowed US cargo flights only to transit their air space and land at some airfields. Their military contribution in Afghanistan was mostly medical personnel, which coincidentally was what Russia contributed. They also had a small combat force which were given the mission to guard a specific village and at the earliest sign of attack, they abandoned the village to the Taliban.
I have been hearing from the leftist I know that Ukraine is a large trading partner with the US and they supply us with a lot of steel. Reality is a bit different. The total trade between the US and Ukraine is $3 billion. They send us $2 billion and take $1 in our exports. Interesting fact, the #1 thing they import from us is iron. That is the exact opposite of what the left is telling everyone who will listen and not bother to research it themselves. When you ask them to cite their source of information it is always a leftist "news" site. At that rate of trade we will never get back the $350 billion biden gave them. And why did he give them that money to start with? Because Zelensky had the dirt on the biden crime family, I think that would be a fantastic starting point to the negotiations. You give us the dirt and we will see about any other deals being made. Other countries are making bank on our support of Ukraine. Trump needs to tell NATO that if they get involved in Ukraine with anything other than peace keeping forces, agreed to in a cease fire deal, when Russia kicks them in the teeth they are on their own as they started the conflict.
What happened today was about the free money spigot being shut off and the US getting some of our money back from Ukraine. Zelensky just wants the money to continue to pour into a war that he cannot win and can only devolve into a wider conflict with worldwide implications. Zelensky even said he wanted the money to continue flowing even if a peace deal was reached. If there is peace then they shouldn't need the money. We've a;ready given them $10,500 for every man, woman and child in the country. The US has bigger problems than saving a hopelessly corrupt country from being overtaken by another hopelessly corrupt country that has nuclear weapons.
Zelensky said he would resign if Ukraine got NATO membership or nuclear weapons. Neither of those things should ever happen. First because Ukraine isn't and never has been an ally and second because giving that petulant child nukes would just mean they would be used at some point.
Zelensky said he would sign the metals agreement and then decided that wasn't a good enough deal, he had to have "security garuntees" and more money from the US or for Russia to pay to rebuild his country. He overplayed his hand and his bluff was called. In fact he has no hand. It has been a month, his weapons stockpiles have to be getting low, at some point he will see the futility of the situation and call Trump and beg for a deal, knowing that a Spring offensive is coming and he won't have anything to stop it.
I want him to hand over everything he has on biden, obama, clinton and any other American politician he has dirt on. That would be the start of the negotiations, otherwise he can wind up in a shallow grave when his country falls.
Oh, and I wonder how much USAID money went into overthrowing the Russia friendly Ukrainian President back in 2014. You can be sure it was a lot.
