The end of an era (personal) - tommag - 07-31-2025

Today I went to the notary to get form oce-46 notarized. It's one of two documents I have to submit to the federal government to shut down my business. Even though I haven't trucked in a year and 7 months it kinda bums me out to formalize it. Fourty-five years, where did the time go!?
I dropped my insurance to the bare minimum to keep my authority active thinking I'd get back to work ($483/month) but I can see that's not going to happen. Oh well, at least I'll not have that drain on my bank account now.
I've put 70k into building what I consider the ultimate money making truck and it only has 85k miles on a $30,000 factory crate motor as well as maybe 600,000 miles on the strongest 13 speed transmission ever built. Not that it hasn't paid for itself but I doubt I could get $20,000 for it in today's market, probably 5k at auction. I'll have a close friend and the best old truck mechanic try to sell it for me, he knows the tractor inside and out.
The Shooter's Apprentice considered buying it but I  built it to lower 48 highway standards and upgrading it to Alaskan standards would be too costly.

Sorry to hear that. On the bright side, now you'll have more time and money for guns and shooting!

Time marches on. Today was my last day at work.....retired from one job and had to quit another...I'm officially unemployed! Been working since I was 15 years old....44 years ..time flies.

Bitter sweet decision for sure! What kind of truck do you have?

RE: The end of an era (personal) - tommag - 08-01-2025

It's a 2000 Freightliner fld120 with a 12.7 Detroit. It was built in October 1999 so it's exempt from the electronic logs mandate. My trailer is a 2013 Utility 53' reefer.

Screamin' Detroit!  Sounds good!  I'm a Mack Bulldog guy myself!  I don't own a truck but I have been a Mack parts manager for going on 32 years now.

I’m hoping to retire at the end of this school year. I’ll probably still have to work, but I can’t take the administration any more. ‘Naughty’ kids can be taught, and can learn how to behave, but parents won’t do it and administration won’t support us. Staring down the barrel of retirement is a sobering activity.

After 16 years as a teacher, I came to that realization in 1989 at the age of 48. Too young to retire, so I went into law enforcement as a new career. Basically the same type of work, but with different rules.
