I have had glasses for about 15 years. Started out with simple bifocals for reading. I had 20/10 vision into my late thirties. Second set was bifocal readers and a bump in my distance to get me to 20/13. The eye doc didn't want to do it and I had to explain my brain needed my great vision back. Next set was trifocals, readers, mid vision, and distance. I can currently see at distance at 20/15.
But, all that does not explain the whole story. I cannot wear progressives. I am in the 1% that gets instantly sick wearing them. I have lost the 20/10 vision at arms reach so I cannot see the details I was used to seeing. For example a wrinkle coat of paint on an appliance, like a fridge, looks like a flat surface unless I get up really close. Seeing those fine details is what made me a good inspector. I lost that ability.
I now have beginning stages of cataracts. I also developed astigmatisms in both eyes and my prescriptions change every six months to a year now. Bright lights, such as indoor LED's blind me. My night vision is poor and oncoming headlamps nearly blind me.
Dime store cheaters stopped working for me 14 years ago. I'm afraid my eyesight will be what takes me out of the workforce first. I have VSP, even in retirement, and I usually pay anywhere from 200-400 bucks each visit for new glasses. The frame manufactures have it figured out where they make you buy new frames each time.....I go in for new lenses but they have to take my frames so now I cannot see...I buy a second frame and lenses. The next time in those frames are now discontinued and you start over with all new frames again. In the beginning I was pretty much wearing out the frames but now I go so often my frames are in great shape and they cannot get lenses for them anymore.
