Laptop Went Belly Up and ........

That sucked. Two mornings ago started my morning routine. Culminated in getting on the laptop to hit my daily forums. Black screen. Tried and tried with assorted "boot" methods. Zero. Fortunately, I had made bootable disks. Zero success. I figure the cpu died. Destroyed the lap top in order to remove the hard drive. Ordered an enclosure for the harddrive in the hopes I can retrieve my files, pics, apps, etc. Received a new laptop yesterday and spent the evening getting it "personalized". Missed 2 days here and 46 unread posts vs a typical 4-8. Now I'm gonna create an "image" of this new Windows 11 and set it up on a regular "daily" backup schedule. Not sure yet as to backup software.

As I was on my phone googling Microsoft crap in relation to setting up the new laptop, long story short, I ended up speaking with "Microsoft support" trying to get a new password. Had no idea what the old one was. Due to doing a zillion steps and a terrible connection with overseas - types, I was on the phone close to 2 hours.

They had me download 2 apps from the Google Play Store which appeared to allow them to access my phone. Near the end, they asked me if I did any online banking, did I have PayPal, etc. They actually wanted me to log into them to search foe any "suspicious" activity. That continued for a couple of minutes til I had no doubt they were going after my accts. I exploded after being on the phone all that time. Told them what they could do. They actually cussed me and I hung up. I immediately uninstalled those 2 apps and then removed them from my list of active / inactive apps in the Google Play Store. During all this, they were having trouble with a website they were trying to send me to. I had no idea what it was. Just thought it was part of the process. the website is named "helpz9.top" which turns out to be a big time scammer site. Fortunately for me, my IP blocked my access to that site. I have an excellent local IP associated with my electric co-op. They're growing by leaps and bounds.

Odd thing is, When I was searching (Google) for Microsoft customer support, their url had nothing slightly different or any of that. Scumbags are really getting sophisticated.

Hard drive was good. Normally it's the CPU going belly up and your files and such are retrievable. Purchased a connections - compatible with my particular HDD enclosure and hooked it up to an older computer. It recognized the drive and I put it through a scan for viruses, malware, and such. It saw 6-7 "trojans" and 1 possibly - evil file. Got them killed and marched on. Copied the files and photos I wanted and saved them to a large flash drive. Installed those on the new laptop. Happy camper.

Note: Speaking of Google. I have multipe Google Nest outdoor cameras. I use their Nest Aware Plus for history and all that. It was time for my annual renewal. I had disable autopay. I purchased (now 200.00 annual) and didn't have it. Worked my butt off troubleshooting. Nothing. Cameras worked but without Aware or Aware Plus, you basically have only real-time monitoring. Contacted Nexus. They told me since it was purchased through the Google Play Store, They were the only ones who could handle it. No way in hell could I communivate with them. Went back to Nest and they told me I didn't have Aware Plus or the basic Aware.

Told them they were crazy. Long story short. I had created a seperate Google account for those cameras when I purchased them. When I purchased Aware Plus the other day, I was in my primary Google account, therefore, It didn't apply to the cameras. Using common sense, I asked if they couldn't just switch my account over, etc. They replied once again that was only a call made by Google Play. They had their phone number but would not give it to me. They would act as a go between and assured me it'd be remedied. Nope, a few days later, I get an email telling me to pound sand. Their excuse is epic. I was told since I purchased Aware Plus in 2024, too much time had elapsed. You read this right.

The 2024 purchase was my initial upgrade from Aware to Aware Plus, It's an annual subscription. My mistake was made only days ago. So I'm stuck with a 200.00 purchase of which does me no good. On this one, not a happy camper. Considering going with another brand during the Black Friday days.
Grrr.
