My best friend is dying!

My best and oldest friend Al has prostate cancer. He’s decided not to do anything about it. I couldn’t convince him to get treatment but I’m not going to stop trying!

I'm not sure. I only just found out last night when I called to see how he was. He's been complaining about pain and fatigue for a month or so. I told him to go see a doctor then but he has a phobia about seeing doctors. I don't know how long he's known about it. He had the TURP done a couple of years ago so we thought it might be related to that. I'm going to insist on more details when I talk to him again.

He's in the hospital! His wife called me and let me know a few minutes ago. I’m going to see him tomorrow morning. Turns out he was diagnosed with the cancer 12 years ago. At the time the docs said he had 6 months. He didn’t do anything about it then. They botched his TURP that he had done about 2 years ago and that has made it worse. Don’t know if it’s spread yet. They’re still doing tests. I’ll keep you updated.

UPDATE

Just got back from the hospital. Al looks and sounds awful! His cancer has spread a lot. They are testing to see if it’s spread to his liver too. He knows he doesn’t have much time left. He told me what he wants me to do with his gun collection and other collections. He has a will and I will be helping his wife deal with it and his many collections. I’m a bit overwhelmed both mentally and emotionally. I’ve never had a friend die on me. he’s more than a friend; he’s my brother from another mother. I always figured I’d go first. I’m still praying.

Sorry to hear this Terry. Sometimes the only thing you can do is be there for them and their family.

My friend called me yesterday. He’s out of the hospital and back home. They gave him Oxycontin so he feels better. The cancer has spread into his bones. The docs give him 4 months at best.
